Randy G, I agree. You can't tell me that (if you are indeed referring to childhood fears) that when you were a kid you didn't have recurring fears at night in the dark?? EVERYONE has :)

Maybe it's just a natural instinct to be leery of things that might pop out of a hiding place (such as under a bed) unexpectedly.
That fear is probably present in everyone at a deeply subconscious level.

Didn't you ever have a sibling grab your ankles from under the bed??? But seriously weren't beds originally to keep the bugs & crawly creatures off you that lurk thereabout.

If you are referring to the idea that children have that there are monsters in the closet, under the bed, or hiding in the dark, I suppose that it is a primordial fear that we have programmed in our genes to be wary of predators hiding in areas that we cannot see very well (like in the bushes, behind the tall grass, etc.).

Good question. I remember as a kid being scared of something hiding in my closet. Sometimes I think kids are more psychic and sense things we don't. It's also engrained in us back to when were hunters and gatherers - instinct - fear of the dark where some dangerous preditor could be lurking.

A fear of the dark and a fear of the unknown. Put them together and you have kids (and adult too sometimes) that are afraid of dark places - under the bed, in the closet, wooded areas.......etc....etc...........
