It seems they sell a lot more small, expensive items (thus charging much more for the shipping than they pay) and not as many large, cheap items (where the shipping would be a good deal for us). Aren't they just exploiting the fact that, say, $10 shipping doesn't seem like as much for a $100 item as for a cheap item of the same size?

I have found the biggest rip off tends to be in the electronics - be it cell phone, pc software or components. Many times you will find an item weighing no more than a pound and the shipping on it can be as high as $50-$75 US - which is utterly outrageous. I have had sellers tell me they need to add to their profit line somehow and by jacking up the shipping rates is the easies way to do it.
I find some of the sellers on Ebay the worst offenders of this practise. Many times I have ordered a disc only to find that the shipping is in the $12.plus dollars when in fact the actual shipping was 95cents - rip off? I believe so.

Most reputable merchants price shipping by weight, price or both. Some do use the umbrella shipping pricing, but the easiest way to handle that is to order as close to the max of the umbrella level your at or go some place else.
