Are you talking about a direct, true democracy where the people vote on everything? India is set up as a true democracy, and because of it, everything is very slow and it is an incredibly bogged down system. America is a Republic that ensures democracy in the states, which provides a level of efficiency not seen in true democracies (in large countries with large populations).

I think it is very hard to get properly informed on the issues... You look at people in the Senate, who have a staff of 20 spoon feeding them the information on what they are voting on, and they can barely keep track. And they don't have a full time job to worry about... Add to that the time for State and local laws...
I don't think a typical person would be able to keep up -- you'd end up having to depend on someone else (who you hopefully share values with) how to vote. This person would not be a friend, but an interest group or business... at that point you might as well elect people to do the voting for you.

I know I'm going to get attacked for this, but the majority of people are idiots. Remember what happened to the Athenians who loved a pure democracy? If the people were left to decide on issues I could see the future now, no taxes but lots of social programs. I live in Massachusetts and people would rather have .3% of their income tax dollars back in their pockets even if it means raising property taxes.

technology will be used to change all results. electronic voting is now under computer control and since the computer does what the code says, it can easily be written and decide who wins just as it is written, not months later when the votes are cast. putting questions to the public would put politicians out of work so they wouldn't want it to be done, let alone easily as that.

Because we've become a society of the "Silent Majority" and are used to convenience. Voting has become such a chore and too time consuming for most. We think "the other guy" is going to vote so why should we? "If you don't use it,you WILL lose it".

We instituted a democratic republic to avoid just such a thing. This country is about majority rule and minority rights. Putting up everything to an intiative takes away from minority rights.
