Europium was not even discovered until 1890!

Its uses include: making types of glass for lasers, for screening for Down syndrome and some other genetic diseases. Europium oxide is widely used as a red phosphor in television sets and fluorescent lamps. It is also used as an agent for the manufacture of fluorescent glass. It is in the anti-counterfeiting phosphors in Euro banknotes.

It wasn't useful in ancient times because it had not been discovered. A major use nowadays is for the red phosphor in a color picture tube.
