It is from a song.....

"What can I give?
What can I bring?
What is a gift
That is fit for a King?

I'll give my best
I'll do my part
I'll give my best to Him....
I'll give my heart"

I also love the words to Good King Wenceslas, it is such a message of giving, and Godly leadership.

Good King Wenceslas looked out,
On the feast of Stephen,
When the snow lay round about,
Deep and crisp and even:
Brightly shone the moon that night,
Though the frost was cruel,
When a poor man came in sight,
Gathering winter fuel.

"Hither page and stand by me,
If thou know'st it, telling,
Yonder peasant, who is he,
Where and what his dwelling?"
"Sire, he lives a good league hence,
Underneath the mountain,
Right against the forest fence,
By Saint Agnes' fountain."

"Bring me flesh and bring me wine,
Bring me pine logs hither:
Thou and I will see him dine,
When we bear them thither."
Page and monarch forth they went,
Forth they went together;
Though the rude winds wild lament,
And the bitter weather.

"Sire, the night is darker now,
And the wind blows stronger;
Fails my heart, I know now how,
I can go no longer."
"Mark my footsteps, my good page;
Tread thou in them boldly;
Thou shalt find the winter's rage
Freeze thy blood less coldly."

In his master's steps he trod,
Where the snow lay dinted;
Heat was in the very sod
Which the saint had printed.
Therefore, Christian men, be sure,
Wealth or rank possessing,
Ye who now will bless the poor,
Shall yourselves find blessing.

Notes:

The Feast Day of St. Stephen, December 26. As such, of course, it is not truly a Christmas carol, but is one of several feasts which fall within the 12 Days of Christmas (Christmastide, Dec. 25 to Jan. 6

It would have to be the famous newspaper article to a litttle girl named Virginia, who wrote in to ask if Santa exists...."Yes Virginia There Is A Santa Claus." I wish I could recite you the whole thing, but I can't remember what all is said in it. However,it is very touching to read because of course the bottom line is that Santa is not a real person , as much as he a warm feeling or the spirit of Christmas. He visits everyone at Christmas time, and gives to them the Spirit of Christmas as a specialgift. So therefore Yes Virginia there is a Santa Claus, is the very last line I believe. That's a great article!

Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol' keeps cropping up in my life in good ways, so I'd have to choose that overall. However, for the 1951 film version with Alistair Sim as Scrooge, screenwriter Noel Langley gave the Spirit of Christmas Present a line that isn't in Dickens, but should have been:

'Mortal! We Spirits of Christmas do not live but one day of our year; we live the whole three-hundred-sixty-five! So is it true of the Child born in Bethlehem!'

A wonderful admonishment to keep the spirit of Christmas in our hearts all year long...

"A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens. Reread this little gem if you have time this season -- it is a beautiful reminder that all of mankind is our "business;" that is, "charity, mercy, forebearance and benevolence." God bless!
