I'd say about 20... though I had been scooting around in go-karts and other 4-wheeled contraptions for enough years that it wasn't really difficult to make the transition to an automobile.
I say 20 because that's what I was required to do in order to pass the driver's education test. Of those, probably 10 were with a parent, 5 were fabricated, and the balance were in the Sears parking lot while intoxicated.
The written DOT exam can be tricky, so make sure you prepare for that as much if not more than the driving portion. If you come to a red arrow, there are no cars coming, and you can see the curvature of the Earth, can you make a left turn? Logic would dictate yes, but Mr. Smokey who pulled me over the other day disagreed, as falling crumbs soiled the ticket he had just handed me. $55 for endangering nothing but my dignity.
Good day to you sir.

It's not measured in hours but the high school driving course lasts six weeks. It's a class within a homeroom period, then the instructor makes arrangements for the students to take the test.

About 15 hrs, cumulative, to learn the basics, to know your controls well enough: after that about 10 hrs each in different types of roads, say, four types -- residential area, low density traffic, city, and highway -- , a total of 40 hrs, and then about 20 hrs for consolidation and situations: so, a total of 75 hrs, plus the time for learning rules regulations, traffic signs etc. -- altogether, budget 100 hrs., and you are through!
