ok my battery is dead now, and cylinders 1 and 4 are still misfiring after getting new plugs and wires. service engine soon light is still on and blinks when i stop at a light for too long. after letting my car sit for about 4 or 5 hours, i went out to warm it up and leave and the battery was dead, dome light didn't even come on, no power locks. in the morning i went back out and the dome light came on and the power locks worked, but there wasn't enough to start the car. anyone know what it could be aside from the alternator? and what about the misfiring?

the plugs should have the right gap to them- i replaced all 4 and it's only misfiring 2 of them (same ones as before). i was told i don't have a distributor.

Replace the battery. Change out the coils corresponding to the misfiring cylinders. Replace the entire unit (ignition coil if it's a 4 tower) if it only has one coil. When was the last time you had a major tune-up on it. Major tune up consists of: air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs, Ignition wires, and igntion coil. (Your car has a distributorless ignition system so it doesn't have a distributor cap and rotor.) The reason the dome light and power lights worked is because the surface voltage of the battery went up just enough to power the accessories. The starter needs the amperage to turn the engine over it doesn't operate on voltage like the accessories. Hope this helps, Jess.

OK, dont do anything drastic.
soundlike it could be your alternator.
first things first. get your car running. jump start it. once you have it running, disconnect the battery and see if it stalls. if it doesnt turn on all your lights, wipers, radio, etc and see if it stalls. if it does, your alternator is not able to keep up to the demand of running the vehicle, therefore isnt creating enough "juice" to charge the battery..hence the dead battery. after letting the battery sit for a while it will recoupe a little power on its own. thats why you had dim lights, but not enough to crank the vehicle.

you can call me at the office toll free 866-712-1984 and I can talk you through some of this if you need it.

But get to square one first. then we can go from there.

p.s.
I also sell auto parts. :-) --- but im not a big store and wont sell you anything that isnt proven to be defective on your end. :-)

Hope this helps. if you need any parts.. give me a yell logixautoparts.com -- we are cheaper than all the "big" stores.
:-)

The coilpack sits directly on top of the engine valve cover. Because cylinder numbers 1 & 4 are mating cylinders, I would be inclined to suspect a failed coilpack, since this type of system fires in pairs (meaning two cylinders fire at the same time). I would be inclined to agree that the battery connections could be poor/corroded, or quite simply, the battery is dead and needs replacement.

I know neons better than any car , trust me Ive solved problems dealers couldnt. For some reason the neons are all prone to the connetions( the little clips that hold relays and fuses under hood in box) loosingup. if you take the plastic relay box cover off on left (drivers) side of car under hood will see all kinds of black square boxes and some fuses.

Slide the box up off the piece it sits on and turn it over yo will find that one or usally many of the little pinch clips that yor relays and fuses plug into have ethier spread apart and are not making a good connection but usally they have sliped down from the box and needto be pushed back up in . then the ONLY way I have been able to make them stay put is to take a hot glue gn and dab a little on each clip where it attaches up through the bottom of the box. becacase they will slip back down after you turn the box back over and pt it back becase of cheap clips, gravity and road vibration. Many people have purchased fuel pumps compters , yo name it anything electrical goes through that box.

This happens especially after someone repairs a headgasket that leaks oil because they are also know for that. Bt when they do the head job the first thing they do is pull that box up off its slides and move it out of the way usally with a bungie or wrap tie but when they do this it pulls on those little cheap clips and then they dont stay in good. if you want to see if im right just pull out a couple or all (one at a time) of those relays or fuses , mostly relays and you will find one or more that are dark black or brown on the prongs that go into the pug clips coming up mfrom the bottom. this means they are not getting a good connection.
please email me back at bunkski@verizon.net or riverviewautosales@verizon.net and let me know what you find. I KNOW neons. dont let anyone talk you ot of this because Ive seen it a thosand times. I have proven them all wrong once I fix that box its just a bad design in the neon, bt it will end yor frstration!

get you battery checked, is usually free at a lot of parts stores.
check the battery connections. take off the cables and clean the connections.
if the connections are corroded the alternator can't get power to the battery
check the fireing order. the wires may be switched. make sure that the wires are clean and tight on the spark plugs.

If cylinders 1 & 4 share a coilpack then I would swap the two coilpacks around and see if the misfire follows the coil. If it does you have your answer.

Blinking check engine lights mean serious damage is being done. You'll need to have the code(s) pulled.

sounds like you have a lose battery cable or a crowded one and as the misfiring could be plugs not gap right or your disturber is bad.

Clean and properly tighten your battery cables to the battery. corrosion on the cables could be preventing the alternator from feeding the battery.

Maybe you're getting a poor air-fuel mixture in those cylinders. I'd have a repair shop run a diagnostics test to see what's up.

Sounds like ignition problem maybe your coil or your crank sensor but don't guess could get expensive take it to a shop with proper equipment that can test it
