They are thinking of using dollar coins instead of bills, but it won't be decided on anytime soon. They were going to get rid of it back when the new Sacajawea dollar came out, but there was so much backlash. That is also one of the reasons that they don't redesign the one dollar bill.
But they are replacing Sacajawea with a Washington next spring.
And the court has said that the bills will need to be changed so that the blind can recognize the difference. It's kind interesting that there are all these changes coming, but 20 years ago they were talking about only minor changes to coins and bills, and now they are changing all the time.

Relax. No one is taking away the one dollar bill.
They've tried introducing dollar coins and they never catch on. If one Did become popular and get used, then they could remove the bill and just use the dollar as pocket change.
They've talked for years and years about eliminating the penny. With the current value of a dollar, a penny costs more to mint than it is worth. There are millions of pennies in change jars in people's homes, doing no good to the economy, earning no interest and being a total waste of space.
And we can't even agree to eliminate that!

There's no way that the dollar bill will ever go away. However, there are plans to make a new series of dollar coins featuring the past presidents. Neat, eh?
What's the source on that penny tidbit?

What you might have heard is that they might change the material, paper, a little bit, so it feels a little different so blind people can identify a one by the feel of it. They used to do it and on some of them you can feel different, some of the older ones, you've probably seen/felt one, but the ones they make now feel the same as anything else. Some people want them to change it because they say it's unfair to blind people, because they could get screwed out of money, they can't see how much the bill is worth, but the government doesn't want to, I think that's what I heard.

I hope not. I heard they want to change to different size bills to help blind people identify money. That is not the right answer. In fact it would hurt the many blind people employed through vending. If all vending machines have to be changed because of bill validaters it would cost so much it would put them out of business. I hope those in government look at this issue more carefully.

not true- yet. It would save a lot of money to use coins instead of bills, but for some reason people don't' want to use them. I just don't' get that... Electronic Vending Machines are required to accept them now, and well, they're more mobile. You can put one in your swimsuit pocket and it will still be easelly usable when you get out of the pool or whatnot.
so why do we care about a scrap of linen so much?
