It depends on what you mean by "evil". Some people believe that evil is relative. That is it is what the individual considers in his own mind as evil. These people believe there is no absolute evil. A book that explores this, written by a noted skeptic, is: "The science of good & evil; why people cheat, gossip, care, share, and follow the golden rule." The author argues for the point that there is no absolute evil or no absolute good. He also explores the existence of moral traits that are universal to the human species.
I think these are the cause of both good and evil and I would argue that for all practical purposes they are absolutes. You can't get away with murder in any culture of the human species with out incurring a lot of disaproval! He also touches on moral intuition. The idea that humans have a built in "instinct" for morality seems true to me. Most people in the world live good upright lives else there would be chaos (like is developing in the middle east) and that instinct for good may be hardwired in us.
A couple books that explore these subjects are given under the sources.

Ravi wrote; The femle sex. A lot of nature documentaries reveal the deadly risks males are forced to go through inorder to win the female. It is true that the female just kind waits and waches who wins and procreates with the stronger or luckier winner. But, is this true for us humans ? Well, if you scroll down any womans peronals ad. You will notice some very highly demanding and cruel reguirements for height and income. A woman who demands to only mate with a man who makes at least 100K/year also demands that he must rape the Earths resources to an extent that is proportional to that amount. Obviously, she and he want to drive in a fancy car. She wont settle for what a woman thought was good enough 1000-500 000 years ago. That is an unnecessarily large home compared to our ancestors. So, Ravi is kind of hinting in the rght direction. We wouldn't have Global warming and massive weapons arsenals if it wasn't for the selective pressure women have been putting on men to be more inventive, smart and lethal at hunting, war and good territory seeking. Civilization is supposed to be from Cain. But, weren't
people evil before that ? Was the man who shot Otsi the Austrian alps pre-historic man evil. Even if he shot him with his bow and arrow for his food and supplies. Because he was starving ? Maybe, the man who killed him and ate his food. Survived long enough to reproduce or feed his children. Who in turn may have many generations later become some Austrian doctor or industrialist or Nazi collaborator. Who knows. In bad times. Those who ponder too long if murder is the greater sin or starvation more than likely lose out to those who don't. And so we are all here. The descendants of murderers, thieves and cruel conspirators.

I am a Christian and since I know evil I can answer. So far any form of evil I have done comes from loneliness. That loneliness is a loneliness of God and of others like you. If you are Gods you can't go wrong but when you start to follow man you will stay with man, which ultimately is evil in itself unless you follow God.

They used to say... money. But money is to be used and not to be used by money. Thereby, the consequences would have to say that the information is the root of all evil. As to consider... that the devil will convince you at all will, that everything is just a state of mind and the devils presence or existence doesn't exists at all.

evil..live. See how similar they are. If you are alive you are likely to come across evil.
Root cause is difficult to find out, but evil is a part of god as we are.
But if u want to ask what causes interaction with evil, than it is somewhat answerable. Ever increasing human expectations and diminishing values of life, attraction towards materialism, selfishness, and being very practical i.e. questions on godly existence. Beware of your 'self' evil resides in us.

Fear is the root cause of all evil. Though Fear itself may be caused by ignorance.
Fear prompts evil & Evil causes more fear in an ever-widening circle.

An evil mind. That is all.
One evil mind , in a person called Hitler , was sufficient to kill a million people. Look at any trouble spots in the world. One simple , straight forward Evil Mind.
