New Orleans mayor pins hopes on incoming Congress
Nagin: `Bureaucratic maze' still hinders New Orleans recovery
By Richard Clough
Washington Bureau
Published December 8, 2006
WASHINGTON -- New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin said Thursday that he is hopeful the new Democrat-controlled Congress will speed efforts to rebuild his city more than a year after it was devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
"I don't sense this Katrina fatigue anymore," the sometimes-controversial mayor said at a National Press Club gathering. "There seems to be a renewed interest and enthusiasm about making the situation right."
Appearing with three City Council members, Nagin said the changing of the guard in Congress next month has revived interest from both sides of the aisle in rebuilding the city. Democrats, he said, will soon have the power to push their recovery plans, while Republicans will want to finish the job that began under their watch.
"We have the best of both worlds," Nagin said.
But Nagin was less positive in his assessment of the city's rebuilding progress, saying most of the money promised by the federal government has not arrived in New Orleans.
"The dollars that have been allocated and appropriated are just not getting to the local governments and to the citizens in a timely manner," Nagin said.
He said officials have received only about $129 million of the $898 million pledged by the federal government to help pay for the city's proposed rebuilding projects.

Not sure I believe anything coming out of his mouth. You choose.

C Ray has done a lot since the hurricane, but unfortunately he has not done some of the right things, and the city's progress has been limited by it. Don't get me wrong, I came back after only 2 weeks so I am glad my water runs, I have gas and electricity, and my garbage gets picked up. C Ray needs to be more visible to the citizens of the city, maybe on a weekly TV appearance on local news stations or 'talks' with the newspaper. Because of his lack of visibility, we (the citizens) don't know what he is or is not doing.
It is important to remember that the city was totally flooded and it will take years to solve the problems that Katrina caused or caused to be shown in the light of day. I also see people who criticize the mayor and his government for low priority issues. I was witness to a meeting where a person complained because their old dog park wasn't open yet and so she had to go to another. This, to me, seems fairly trivial when you also have to rebuild a dysfunctional public school system. Hopefully C Ray is making the right decisions so his legacy is the infrastructure of a better city that before.
I voted for him, and given the last choice between him and Mitch Landrieu, I would vote for him again.

well hes not doing much. There should have been levee,s built there and this would not have happened but i think our President didn,t approve the levee,s so they didn,t get them.I feel sorry for all those people but there was so much help they needed and they did not get it....Also thats a very dirty city and it is full of crime and immorality, and I feel sorry for the victims there but a lot of the people there are ungrateful also.We brought a lot of them to Houston to the Dome and a lot of them were rude and thiefs and committed many crimes....I noticed they have really got that madigrau going though....and they tore our Dome up.We went to take them food, sandwishes ,chips and drinks and they threw the sandwiches at us and they were very ungrateful, not all of them though some were really trying and we felt bad for the honest and nice ones......They need to put forth a little effort ontheir part also to help themselves.......
