The first thing is because it is a small amount of money you have to be aware of fees and charges. Risk and return go together, so if you take a higher risk you also stand a chance of taking major loss. The highest risk investment would be low price small cap stock. Stay away from so called penny stocks.
A less risky option would be to buy a mutual fund, agressive growth, foreign stock or one of the higher risk groups.
There are a number of low cost brokers, TD, Scottrade, Ameritrade, etc.
