Covalent bonds occur when two atoms that have equal affinity for electrons share electrons for stability.

Ionic bonds usually occur when one atom surrenders it's electron to another and typically result in stable ions (i.e. charged atoms)

Electrons are shared in covalent bonds. They are transferred in ionic bonds.
