There could be many reasons. You could be afraid it will hurt.
Maybe because your first exam was painful. If you had your
first pelvic exam when you were still a virgin. Pain would have
occured. It won't occur again, unless you let yourself tense up.
Then, you might have some minor discomfort. Nothing major though.
Maybe you've been having some problems and are afraid there could be a serious problem like cancer going on....but don't really want to know.
Either way, you need to go get the test. A good friend of mine
was just diagnosed with HPV. (It's the same virus that causes
genital warts and cervical cancer.) A woman can carry the virus for years without knowing she has it, after she has been infected.
Many tiimes warts show up inside where they can't be seen or felt. My friend's doctor said all women that are sexually active
should be tested at least once a year.

Perhaps you are afraid of showing what is usually a private part to a doctor.

Don't worry too much because doctors are used to doing pap smears and it is just another part of the job.

Pap smears should be painless, although they can be a little bit uncomfortable.

It is better to have them as soon as possible, because the longer you leave it, the greater the chance further action needs to be taken, which is less pleasant.

Think of it as looking after yourself and making sure you are healthy. Women around the world do it every day. Sexual health clinics are usually the best places to go because they do them all the time and are more experienced than the local GP. However you may prefer your GP if you have a better relationship with him/her and you trust them.

You may be able to take a trusted friend along with you if you are scared.

And just think, it is not as unpleasant as a man having to have his prostate checked.

you're afraid because it's an uncomfortable situation to lay on a table, legs spread with no undies on. The fact is, for you health it needs to be done. Its only about a minute or a minute and a half and it is uncomfortable but your doctor wont be down there judging you or anything, just making sure everything looks healthy. doctors see lots of these in a day, its their job. all i can say is you need to go in, and when its time just explain that you are really uncomfortable with this and the doctor will make it as quick as possible, trust me.
Its not that bad though hun, you gotta get it done, so you might as well get it over with.

good luck, i hope you do well

Before I had my first one, I was afraid to because I thought it would hurt a lot. But it actually didn't hurt at all, just felt kind of weird and didn't even last that long.
If you feel uncomfortable going to a male doctor for it, then you should find a female doctor to go to.

Because it's a scary thought. But don't be afraid. It's really nothing to worry about. Depending on your doctor, and whether or not you've had one before, it probably won't take more than five minutes. It's a little cold and slightly uncomfortable, but really nothing to worry about!
