Hi there,

I am going to visit a friend of mine in Chicago, and he is convincing me of staying in the Rosemont area instead of downtown since its cheaper and just 35 mins away by train. I want t to go out and enjoy the best of Chicago, resurants and night life, and was wondering if he's right and you can enjoy it by staying 20 miles away ! So for those who live in Chicago, what do you think guys ?

Nah, you can't enjoy Chicago while staying in Rosement. You'll be out partying somewhere at a great bar or club and then have to take that LOOOONG blue line train ride all the way back to Rosemont. Not fun if you're a little tipsy and tired. Or even if you drive, you don't want to be on the road after partying and maybe drinking. You have two choices: either stay somewhere in the city and be only a short cab ride back to your hotel. Or stay and party in Rosemont. There are a few hotels that have bars in them and maybe there's a dance club or two, but usually they're spread out and you have to drive to each one. In Chicago, you can walk from one great restaurant to a great bar to a great club, etc., and still be on the same block.

Good luck getting downtown from Rosemont in 35 minutes. Plus, Rosemont is a no mans land of industry and hotels. If you really want to save money there are a bunch of chain hotels by Midway that would be a lot closer. There's nothing to do in the (somewhat dicey) neighborhood, but it's the same in Rosemont. There are relatively inexpensive ($75-100/night) downtown if you look.

ur friend is probably right, the rosemont area is cheaper but if u want to stay out and enjoy the city u will have to find a different form of transportation home. a rental would be a good idea but u would have to deal with the hassles of parking. the rosemont area is considerably cheaper when compared to the way overpriced chicago hotels.

As a general rule, the closer you get to downtown, the more you're going to pay. It's considred a luxury to be able to live near the center of the action. You're best bet is to look further away. Chicago has great public transportation (well, most of the time) so commuting is not that hard. That being said, try the Edgewater neighborhood. Relatively safe (it's the big city, of course it's going to have crime), affordable (you can find a one bedroom starting at $600), it's got grocery stores, restaurants, book stores, yoga studios, etc. It's a very diverse community, with just about every nationality there. It's very close to the lake, which comes in handy in the summertime. You should check it out in person, and for that matter all the areas you consider. And go there in the daytime AND at night. Places are a lot different at night. But I had a cop tell me that Edgewater is one of the best kept secrets in Chicago.

I grew up in Des Plaines, next to Rosemont. It's a nice area to stay in, and not far frmo downtown. I would recommend it to you as well. Rosemont has nice upscale hotels, and Des Plaines (right next door) has more moderately priced ones available. The Kennedy Expy is right there, as is the Subway....so getting downtown is a piece of cake. It would take between 20 minutes and 1 hour, depending on when you travel...obviously rush hour is a pain in the butt. Rosemont and Des Plaines has an abundance of restaurants and enough bars to keep you satisfied as well.

If you are looking to experience Chicago, Rosemont is not the place to do it. Find a less expensive place to say in the city (there are a few) you aren't saving enough money to miss out on a great experience.

There are plenty of neighborhoods inthe city proper you can live in. I suggest Wrigleyville, Lake View, Lincoln Park, Andersonville. If you want more affordable try Portage park or Old Irving ( a little further west but still close enough) Check out this website for apartments/ homes....
you can look up places by neighborhood

Stay in the city! Rosemont is a bit of a boring suburban nightmare.
