I am attempting to build my first web site and I was browsing thru a book at the library and I read I can use a shim.gif to keep my tables on my web site from collasping in different browses but it did not explain how to make a shim gif, could some one tell me how to make one..

Is it better to use bmps, jpegs for my images or gifs and could you please explain your answer.

Is it better to build a web page using tables or frames or a combination of both.

thanks in advance for your help

A shim.gif (more commonly, spacer.gif) file is a 1 pixel by 1 pixel GIF with a transparent background.

You prevent tables from collapsing by "stretching" the gif, inside a table cell, to the width and height you want a table to be.

What image format to use depends on a variety of factors. You should not use bitmaps (bmp) because the file sizes are too large for the quality of image.

I use GIFs for images that are small and do not have many colors. GIF files only have up to 256 colors, so they don't render complex pictures -- such as photographs -- very well. But for putting up simple text phrases, clip art, buttons and icons, more often than not, a GIF will do fine.

Also, if you want a transparent background on your image, GIF is one of only two Web image formats that support transparencies (PNG is the other).

For most Web images, JPG is your best bet; it offers the best quality for the smallest image sizes, and how long it takes your Web page to load will significantly impact how long users will stick around to see your site. The quicker, the better.

It is not better to build a Web site with tables or frames. Sometimes both make sense; sometimes, neither.

If your site actually displays content from several other Web sites, using frames quite a bit makes sense. If your site presents a lot of data, using tables a lot makes sense.

But in terms of layout, very few Web designers use either to dictate layout these days, in part because those tools scream amatuer effort, and in part because between CSS and AJAX, you can achieve far better results for design than those old tools allow.

Personally, I prefer to use percentage settings on my tables so that my tables DO collapse to meet the user's screen resolution. I cannot imagine wanting it any other way. However, a shim.gif would be a simple graphic that has no color to it (hence, a transparent GIF file, not a BMP or other type--they can't be transparent) of a specific size. So, suppose you want to force your table to be 5" wide, then make a shim.gif that's 5" wide and perhaps a couple of pixels high.

I hate frames. When I want to refer someone to a web page that was created using frames, I have to workaround finding the URL because framed pages are always using the URL of their frame, not the contents.

BMPs and JPGs are "bitmaps". Bitmaps cannot be transparent. GIFs can be transparent. By using GIF graphics, you can easily change the background color of your web without having to recreate all your graphics to have that same background color. Hope it makes sense. Personally, I prefer JPGs and tend to always have white background webs. They're much cleaner and more professional in my opinion.

I never heard of shim.gif, sorry

As for images, Dont use BMPS - their file size is far too big. Try to use eithe jpg or gifs.

Frames are terrible. They are neither search engine friendly or user friendly. Tables are also quite old nowadays. Tableless designs are much more better in the sense that they are easier to code, make the page load faster and make use of the latest technology avaliable
