While they are very similar in meaning, obligated has a sense of mandatory or required commitment, whereas obliged has both that meaning and the sense of being in someone's debt for something. So in some ways they are interchangeable; you can used obliged instead of obligated, as they both have "being morally or legally bound" in the dictionary definition, but you cannot always use obligated in place of obliged.

The differences are, obliged means you are grateful, thankful to someone.
Obligated means you are, or feel that you are, obligated (need to do) something for someone or at the job. etc.
