I have XP using a 300 gig drive.

You could have a bad drive. Some motherboards limit drive size also. I've seen both. You didn't give any information so its impossible to say what's wrong.

First of all, check your motherboard documentation. Your motherboard needs to have 48-bit LBA support in order to support large hard drives (over 137GB). If your motherboard does not support it, look for a BIOS update.

If no BIOS updates are available, you need to buy an ATA controller card, such as the Promise Ultra100 TX2, that supports large hard drives.
