well, u could perform the disk cleaner application, and then defragment the drive, if its really bad, there will be files that wont get defragmented, and all must be moved off the drive, defrag again, then place the files back on the drive. A good tip with defrag is, to defrag it many times over and over again, regardless of it having a 'Defragmented' status, this will bunch all the files together, thus creating more 'feilds' of space, to put all the previously 'un-defragmentable files that u might have placed on a slave HDD or a cdrw\dvdrw etc... once the files are put back on the main hdd, they will be defragmented. Acheive at least 30% freespace, minimal 'chunks' of data (well defraged), everything set on the 'lowest' setting in any settings that would directly impact system performance, (i.e windows performance settings, gpu\sound processor settings) even the look of modern xp takes a toll on the low end computer, it is best to change the look to classic, with the 'old' windows taskbar, also, it is good to change the seeting to 1024x768 or lower, since it takes alot to power any above that, and most monitors cant display anything higher then that and look better, its meant for big monitors. If it still runs bad at this point, then id do the whole format thing, cuz its good not to do that, inless u have some time on ur hands and not much valuble files.

*edit*
also, if its a corrupt dll or somethign liek that, u can use system restore to go back a restore point or two to further extend the ability to solve ur problematic situation

You need to completely clean up the hard drive because just deleting the files and folders will only delete a fraction of what the hard drive has. if you don't know how to do this you should ask a technician. CAREFUL there are some very essential things your computer needs to run and if you delete them you will have serious problems

If you're doing any of this yourself remember to make a back up... please

First, it is rare to need to reformat your hard drive. In the five years I've owned a computer business we've only done it a few times. Any qualified technician can clean it up and remove all the junk on it. If you aren't really technically minded it would be better if you went that route.

to format your drive you first need to make sure you are able to boot from your cd rom. insert your win xp cd and boot from your cd rom, you'll press f8 to agree to the license terms, then when promted delete the current instalation of windows. then install a fresh copy and make sure you format using ntfs and dont use the quick format option. do not do this if you are unable to boot from the win xp cd rom.
