When your crab starts molting you should put him in an iso tank by himself that way he wont be disturbed the sand should be about 6" deep that way he can dig down into it he then will shed his skin and then he will eat his exoskeleton it is very normel for them to do that but if you leave the crab in the tank with the other hermit crabs you will need to cut the top of a two liter bottle cap off of the bottom of the bottle and then stick it all the way in the sand around him hermit crabs can not resist the smell of a molting exoskeleton oh and make sure you take the lid off of the bottle or he will die.

if the crab is in with other crabs, it is a good idea to make a barrier the other crabs cannot climb and isolate the molting crab. His exoskeleton will be very soft at this time and he will be vulnerable to attacks until he gets into his new shell. Provide a hiding place and several shells in a shallow dish of water. Hermit crabs like to chage shells in water.

As soon as he is settled and his exoskeleton has hardened, he canbe reintroduced to the other crabs.

They will definatly need a bigger cage, but you need to make sure that they have plenty of water to drink (on a sponge) and to do into, because this is the most important time for them to be moist.

Find some bigger shells for them to move in to. Otherwise talk to the pet store that sold them to you.
