If you will elevate her hand and use cold cloths or ice on it for 15 min. at a time, the swelling will go down completely.
I was an Army Medic.

If she can use it o.k. then she should be fine. Keep monitoring it and call the pediatrician if there are any changes such as:
it starts to swell up again
she complains of pain
the coloration changes to grey, red, bluish purplish...
it does not completely go back to normal size in the next few hours.
The swelling is because the fluids were not able to travel out of her hand causing edema (swelling), especially if she slept with that side down.
You could try to have her hold it above shoulder level off and on as much as she will. That will make gravity help the fluids to travel back out of her hand. Good Luck!!!

The hair ties restricted the blood flow. Be careful dont let her play with them that can cause her hand to go numb and she might lose it because of the blood flow being restricted.

YES, YOU ARE LUCKY SHE DIDN'T WRAP THE TIES AROUND HER NECK AND STRANGLE HERSELF. NEVER SEND A 2 YEAR OLD TO BED WITH ELASTICS, TIES OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT.
BASICALLY SHE CUT OFF THE CIRCULATION TO THE HAND SO IT SWELLED UP AND WHEN THE TIES WERE REMOVED THE CIRCULATION CAME BACK AND THAT TOOK AWAY THE SWELLING.

call the doctor and describe the situation, I'm sure they will know if you should be worrying of not. sounds fine to me, though. man oh man, kids really do know how to give us a good scare, don't they?!? That sounds like something my child would have done when she was 2.
