Hey, congratulations! Welcome to womanhood :)
Don't worry about being embarrassed telling your mom -- she's expecting this! Just tell her that you you got your period, in whatever words feel comfortable. Personally when I got mine, when I was 11, I was so freaked out I ran screaming at the top of my lungs from the bathroom.

Know that all moms have gone through the same thing!
If it's immediate, simply try to get her alone, like in her bedroom or in the bathroom, or even while taking a walk.
Don't be afraid! Come right out and say, "Mom, I started my period." and wait for a reaction.
Most moms will be calm and ask if you need anything, BUT you might have a mom that would freak out or cry. Don't worry. You can't change the situation, so no matter what she does, she can't ignore it.
If you get silence, ask to go to the drugstore to get what you need.
That's really all there is to it, you might need to comfort that "My baby really isn't my baby anymore" type Mother by saying "I will always be your baby" but, it's really easy. Almost like telling her that you got an A on your math test. Don't cower in your womanhood, this is just a new stage in your life.

Tips
Be calm when you tell her
It's also good at a time when you are both relaxed

Warnings
It's a good idea to not tell the whole world. Tell your mom where others can't hear you, at least not ones that you wouldn't want to know. (BROTHERS!!!!!!!)

I always had the best talks with my mom in the car. I'm not sure why but something about sitting captive in the car side by side so we weren't looking each other right int he eye made it easier to divulge my secrest :) Try just saying "mom, I have to tell you something." Most likely you'll freak her out into thinking there's something horribel you're going to say like you've decided to pierce your nose and get a tattoo and take up smoking. So then you can say "I got my period yesterday and I just wanted to tell you so that you could tell dad and help me buy tampons or pads." then she'll be SO relieved that you're not getting the tattoo and all you had to tell her was that you've got your period she'll smile, hug you and take you to the store and maybe out for milkshakes :)

This is the pregnancy area. We don't have periods anymore. You should check the area you put your question in but basicly when I got mine I was 11. I was reall excited becuz this meant to me that I was no longer a child but becoming a woman so I ran from my friends house a few houses down all the way to where my mom was to tell her right away. I guess the best way is to just tellhim or ask them to buy you some pads.

Congratulations. I think being honest with your parents is the best way. Parents usually get fairly excited that their daughter is growing up and is able to discuss things with them.
Don't forget the your mother and grandmothers went through the same thing. Talk to them and good luck...

just come out and say you need to go to the store and buy pads or tampons, they'll get the picture. Trust me I know its hard to tell them. I hid mine for like 5 months. But finally I just had to do, and it was a big weight lifted. So go for it

Oh Hon - this is nothing to be ashamed of or uncomfortable about for this is your first step into womanhood.

Speak with your mother first of all, so she can guide you in regard to care for sympthoms and femine needs.
She may be able to speak with your dad for you in regard to this.

Or simply speak openly to both of them, stating that you have begun your first step towards being a lady and they will certainly understand.

Sit and talk to your mom and explain that you have been blessed with being a woman and let her tell your dad. I don't think it's anything that dad's really want to know. Your mom can handle it and answer any question you have.

Ask for some tampons and Oxi-Clean (to wash the underwear).

Works every time.

Just go up to your mom and tell her that you have started. I bet she will be very excited to know that her little girl isn't a little girl any more.
