You can do the process described above, but there is an easier way to do it if you don't want to poke around in the registry files, which can be dangerous.

First, the easiest method is to just use ALT-CTRL-Delete, and go the the processes tab and use the "end process" button to end processes. This is the easiest method, though be careful and know what you are ending. All of the system files are uninterruptible, so it won't ruin your computer, but you might close that word processor with your almost completed essay on it.

Secondly, you can change the start-up of your system. If you do Run, and type in "Msconfig". This will open a window. Concern yourself only with the last tab. It will allow you to choose what processes your computer will start-up with. Again, you should know what you are doing, but the important processes will be hidden from you.

In control panel click administrative tools/services and you can then see all the processes. You have the option of setting these to automatic, manual or disabled by double clicking and selecting the option. Now some of these functions are obvious, others obscure. Be careful in changing these, if in doubt set to manual and then the process will start when required. However, if you are not using wireless for example you could disable "Wireless zero configuration". There is plenty of advice available on the web and stopping unnecessary services can speed up your PC noticeably.

Uninstall programs you don't need. Using the Task Manager to end processes is only temporary - you would have to do it every time you restart your computer. Using MSConfig is almost like dabbling in the registry - lots of abbreviations and acronyms and unless you're careful, you can mess it up easily.

Simplest way is just to uninstall unneeded programs entirely.
