Preferably colorful ones? Tank will be a decent size, maybe 20 gal.

Guppies & Mollies are pretty fish. Then of course, there's Goldfish that come in many varieties. I would suggest Bettas, but they are better as a solitary fish.
Hm..what else? Tetras & Neons are cute, really small though, so you'd have to make sure your filter has something on it, to prevent them from being sucked up into it.

Most people will tell you to get bettas, and the males are colorful and relatively easy to keep, but if you don't want to be like everyone else, and want easy, cool looking fish, here are some ideas:

-dwarf gouramis: I just bought a beautiful pearl gourami, and as long as you don't put fighting males with each other everything will be fine. When your water quality evens out in a month or so, look at getting some golden gouramis, they are more delicate, but rival any tropical fish in color.
-rasboras: this family of fish are extremely outgoing and peaceful, and fairly hardy. I bought 8 golden scissortail rasboras and a few hours later they were already mating in the tank! Most species are intensely colored and will swim all over the tank if kept in small schools.
-tetra: rainbow or colored tetras are even too bright for my taste (electric colors) but look great in a planted tank and are very easy to care for. Colored skirt tetras are very cool in schools.
-Corydoras catfish: not very colorful, but some of the most gregarious, community fish you will ever find. They will swim up to all fish and nuzzle around them, and almost never stop sniffing around the tank for algae to eat. Don't be worried if you see one hanging upside down or floating at the bottom not moving, they go to sleep a lot if there isn't any food in the tank.

I would suggest a variety of fish for your first tank. I would stay away from guppies and mollys just because they tend to get "ick" really easily, that is a bacterial disease that slowly kills fish and spreads to all the fish in your tank. I would definitely get a "scum-sucker" or plycostemus (i forgot the spelling) they will help keep the tank clean, because they eat algae. I would get a few tiger barb fish, buy them young and get them all the same size, so they can grow together. Then, I would get maybe some neon fish, they tend to be pretty hardy. The two above breeds of fish travel in schools, so they are really neat for kids (and big kids) to watch swim together in a big tank. Good luck!

20 gal.is a terrific size tank for a "community"tank.
Properly laid out,I'd suggest cardinals, gouramis, juvenile angels,
& a docile type of bottom feeder of some sort.
Provide plenty of cover for the smaller fish, like coontail-moss,
(even plastic) for the babies, that will come.Toss in one male Betta for color.
Beware of guppies & mollies.Prolific breeders.You won't be able
to handle all the "wee-babes."
Best bet, visit your local library & take a "crash' course on the
type of tank you'd like to have.
Good luck in your endeavor.
P.S. Stay away from that placostimus. They get BIG,distructive,
harmfull to other fish,& can tear a tank to pieces in less time,
than you can "kiss a duck."

Guarami's are neat. I had one that was so smart that when he was hungry, he would spit water on me from across the room to get my attention. On the other hand, I also like fried catfish.

Betta's are good but you can only have one per tank. I would try goldfish too. Cant really kill them too easily.
