I have a Dell Inspiron 600m with Windows XP operating system. When I do the above I get the following diagnostic: LOCALS~1\Temp\796b_appcompat.txt What does it mean? How do I fix it?

Of course it does. Why are you trying to edit your C drive?

You need to open the file 796b_appcompat.txt in notepad and go through and try to determine what file/program is creating the error message. There may be a reference to a dll file that is triggering the error message. This could be the result of a corrupted file. Your solution could be to uninstall the program associated with it. If the file appears to the a system file you may want to run the microsoft system file checker... it will replace corrupted protected (system) files.

Start>Run> type in "sfc /scannow" (no quotes) and hit enter

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
