i own a repair shop, and a four bolt main has a stronger main cap on it,,it simply put has four bolts that hold it down instead of two..there better for holding up,,but this only applies to the crank shaft,,you can still throw a rod in a four bolt main as easy as you can a two bolt main but the blocks are a lot tougher in a four bolt,,they will take more stress than a two bolt main will ,,over all there a better engine to build if your looking for one that will last ,,good luck,i hope this help,s..,have a good x-mas.

The front and rear main caps still only use 2 bolt in a 4 bolt main block, only the center 3 caps use 4 bolts to secure them.

in a 4 bolt mains there are actually four bolts that retain the main bearing caps in 2 bolt mains only two. Four blot mains are stronger and will handle more stress but are not really needed unless you are planing to pump out mega horsepower. The two bolt mains are totally reliable even up into the upper 300's horsepower.

The "mains" are where the crankshaft is held and it rotates on. The main caps are the caps that clamp down onto the crank shaft. Some blocks use 2-bolts on the main caps, some use 4. 4 is stronger. 2 is usually enough.
