The only song I know about a river that was written in the 1800's is "Way Down Upon the Swanee River," but it's about a river in Florida and is the Florida state song. I'm clueless about a river in Georgia.

The "Suwanee River" was made famous in the song "Swanee" written by Stephen Foster and sung by Al Jolson. The problem is that the song's actual title is "The Old Folks Back Home" , so it is not technically a "river" song. Both the Chattanooga and the Chattahoochee have had at one time or another songs written about them. Try putting in a search -The Rivers of Georgia- and follow the various links from there. Happy hunting!

The only Georgia river song I can think of off the top of my head is "Way down yonder on the Chattahoochie, it gets hotter than a hoochie coochie. We made love on the GA asphalt, got a little crazy, but we never got caught..." but that's by ALan Jackson and is from the 1980s/1990s not 1800s

That would be Swanee River ... alternate spellings Suwannee and Suwanee ... by Stephen Foster, the real title is The Old Folks at Home.
