Just went out and got two (male) Bettas as a first pet for my two boys. I have them each in a pretty good size (round) fishbowl, with colored gravel, and small fake plant. Anything else I need to do? Is it OK to leave the two bowls right next to eachother, all the time?

How often should we feed them? I've read 2-3 times a week & once a day.

Make sure you get some dechlorinator/anti-chlorine solution if you're using tap water. It removes all the chlorine which is potentially deadly to many types of fish. Get proper food, preferably those specified for bettas as bettas can be very picky eaters. You should feed them twice a day, feed as much as they can eat in around 2 minutes (that should be around 2-4 pellets). It's a good thing to fast them once a week as it helps their digestive system (sort of like detox). Since you're keeping them in a bowl, try to do a 10% water change everyday and change the entire bowl's water once a week with aged and dechlorinated water. Don't put them too close as they will feel threatened or challenged by the sight of another betta (yes, bettas ARE fighters among their own kind). This puts stress on them and might shorten their lifespan. That's all the basic steps you need to know about betta keeping.

I fed my beta once a day. Make sure the water level isn't too close to the top, my fish tended to jump (into coffee mugs on the kitchen counter). Don't keep the bowls close to each other. They'll unfurl their pretty fins, but it stresses the fish out. Betas CAN be put in tanks with other fish, as long as he's the "prettiest" one in there. They'd do good with guppies, tetras, and other plain fish. Be sure to change the water regularly as well, as ammonia, fecal matter, uneaten food, and surface skim tends to build up. Male betas will build a "nest" out of small bubbles.

You should get drops that take the chlorine out of the water after you change the bowls. Also, I would move the bowls, just incase the try to go after eachother, and bump into the glass.

You definitely don't want the fish to be able to see each other, even if it is through glass. Male beta fish will tend to bang their heads against the glass trying to get to the other fish until they die. Also, I would recommend a small aerator for the tank, it will help circulate the water so that you don't have to clean the bowl as often, as well as provide healthy oxygen for your fish! Good luck!

Fish do not need to be fed everyday. However, I fed my bettas everyday. Just not alotl. I do not think it hurts them to be kept beside each other. Mine were in the same tank seperated by a divider.
