Anyone who really understands belly dance, and how much it takes to learn the movements well, knows that it is an art form.

I have been taking belly dancing lessons for the past 2 years and am just now getting good at it. It takes a lot of work. There are a lot of exercises to developer your muscle and that takes along time.
I have a better understanding of my own body with the lessons. Before I started I was just curious and a whole lot nervous. I was over weight and was short of breath after just a few steps. I didn't think that I was sensual let alone desirable. I can tell you that I am all that and a bag of chips now. Belly dancing has opened my eyes to the fact that I am a beautiful mature woman, in good shape and am not afraid to show off the progress I have made through a lot of discipline.
I have danced for my partner and when I do I get excited watching his excitement. I have also danced on stage fully dressed and the only excitement was that of a great performance.
Most of the woman in my troop are full figured. You have to have the belly and hips if you want to show it off in the first place.
Thanks for letting me share my thoughts with you.
Happy dancing.

I view it as an erotic art form. There is nothing dirty about it.

Art form of course, "dirty "is in the mind of the beholder not the dancer.

It's an art form. Really beautiful one, too. I'm amazed at having that much control over your body. Enjoy!

It totally depends on what intentions you have when you are doing it.
I view it as an art form first.

kind of both...i really like to watch the gals belly dance at the ren-fest, and it is kind of erotic, and most belly dancers i know (and i know 3 or 4 or maybe 8 or 10) are artists (painters, musicians, one is a poet.)
art form, definitly art form, on the erotic side.
