I thought it was about 120 miles above the Earth, but as I was listening to a Yahoo Reuters report...the female reporter noted that the astronaughts were "thousands of miles above the Earth" as the first 6 words of the news clip. The linke is http://news.yahoo.com/i/753

Both of the above answers are correct. Remember that nautical miles are a little longer than the regular mile we use every day. The space station orbits about 220 miles up, not 120. That is regular statute miles. 5,280 foot miles.

You were a lot closer. The ISS's perigee is 190.5 nautical miles (352.8km) and its apogee is 191.3 nautical miles (354.2km). Even the U.S. space shuttles only have a general apogee of about 520mi (1000km). Don't believe everything you hear on the news.

They said yesterday it was 234 miles up or about 390 Km.
