In the 1960 the protest were on a massive scale. Hundreds of thousand, and for the big ones up to a million people would show up. The government responded with military as well as police to keep order. Thousands were arrested, some were beaten and at Kent State several were shot and killed by the national guard. Many college campuses were shut down for days. Some were deliberately disruptive, blocking road and sitting on bridges. Because of the draft and the high casualty count students were very passionate about the war. Many knew someone who had been killed or wounded in the war. However not all students opposed the war, some supported it and and some remained on the sidelines. They went on for almost 10 years with the peak from 1966 to when the draft ended about 1972.

In 2003 if you headed to a protest you do not expect to be beaten by police or killed by the militia.

And a lot of the response when seeing the protest killings on TV in the 60's was they deserved it for protesting.

It is actually none of them. The only difference I see is that Vietnam protests were about the entire establishment of government, whereas the more recent protests are about a single administration.
