In rebuttal of the argument, I think what Lincoln said stated it best.
Roughly stated: Anyone who thinks slavery is good, should try it for a while.

Slavery was argued by some Americans to be good because of cheap labor for the growing industries and agriculture.

No one said it in 1837. I can tell you who said it in 1834, 1839, and again in 1942, but not 1837.
