the best thing to do is to memorize this
Orbital and amount of electrons they can hold
S orbital holds 2
P orbital holds 6
D orbital holds 10
F orbital holds 14

s
1
2 p
3 2
4 3 d
5 4 3
6 5 4 f
7 6 5 4
--- --6 5

You need to go from right to left on here to see the order in which you would need to write them. and the numbers under the leters are the coefficients and the number of electrons in the shell are the powers the letters are raise to. The only short hand is the Noble gas way and you would still need the periodic table but memorizing these short little trick will make you independant. You wont even need the periodic table a calculator maybe if you get in to the higher numbers.
Hope this helps you become more self sufficient and please don't doubt yourself. You can do wonders if you would just apply the effort you spend on avoiding things into actually finding the solution.
