Most distros include support for Intel wireless chips. Broadcom and Motorola chips have much less support. The lates Ubuntu distro supports them in a default install, but it's a bit of a pig to get it running. Sorry, forgot how I did it...

Linux supports lots of wifi cards.
Many drivers are included right in the kernel sources and many more as add on modules.
If you need support on a particular driver/ card, you gotta say what you got!
