I teach in public schools so I am a little biased. But.. from what I hear people saying:
1. Private schools do not have to accept learning disabled or lower abilitied students. So the curriculum can be designed for one level of students as opposed to the "average" student, where gifted children get bored and lower end students get lost.
2. Private schools can kick out students that are behavior problems in the classroom. Public schools have to accept any child that lives in their community: low income, juvenile delinquints, drug users, neglected. We welcome them all. We can not force them to move, drop out or kick them out because they bring down our state testing scores.
3. Private schools seem to have better teachers... (maybe... but who wouldn't be an awesome teacher when they don't have to work with students with behavior problems, drug problems or academic problems?
4. Because Parents are paying for the child's education, they are usually (sometimes by force) more active in the private school activities. When Parents and teachers and children work together the outcome is going to be better.
5. Private schools do not have to meet state curriculum guidelines and therefore can mold the information being taught to the needs and interests of the students.
Now.. i'm going to say two things on behave of both....
My fiance went to a private school. I went to a public school. We both have high IQ's...We both went to college. We are both successful at what we do.. we both scored the exact same thing on the ACT, but I beat him on the language part of the SAT. A child who wants to learn will get an education where ever they attend school. Second....My fiance (private all boy high school) is very introverted. I wouldn't say he lacks social skills.. however, he is uncomfortable in a group of both women and men. I'm not even sure how we started dating, I probably asked him because he is not very outgoing until he knows people. He blames this on not having experience talking to girls during those teenage years.

Private schools are not better than public schools. If anything they are substandard in many cases. They DO NOT pay teachers more because they do not get help from the state! The money people have to pay for tuition mostly goes to the maintenance of the building, the supplies, the grounds, etc. etc etc. Teacher's in private schools do not get paid well!. Many private schools get teacher's who are not certified . After all they can not attract the best due to low salaries and benefits. The children can not get the same services as public school children . Parents have to pay extra for things like extra help, uniforms, sports and so on. In public schools the taxes pay and the federal government helps out also.
The private schools may have better test scores only because they do not have students who have learning problems. Remember--public schools must accept everyone. Private schools do not tolerate bad behavior. Students can be expelled from the school! Classes are small in these schools because not many parents can afford to send their kids there.

Well, I'm a public school teacher in the state of Texas. It is a very competitive world in public education nowadays. EVERYTHING is about the test (TAKS, in Texas). So any real teaching you have is aimed at the TAKS. That means that other things go by the wayside.
In Private Education their curriculum is probably not as focused on TAKS and they are able to really educate children, give children experiences, help them learn to think etc.
Also in private education, you have parents paying for their childs education. If a parent cares enough to fork out the money and deal with the inconvenience of transporting their child to a private school...well, that's a parent that really cares. So the parents care a good deal about their children being good citizens, making good grades, being involved, etc. So, it's the type of individual and family that attends the school, not so much what the school is doing.

The kids learn a little more in pravite schools. When they come out they are like one and two grades ahead of other kids. My girl is 3 and she can read and write. You can't get that in most public schools.

In most cases private schools are smaller. Because of that they can give more individual attention to students. Many private schools are also selective. They only take well-qualified students, which means the poorest students are not part of their student body. Finally, because the families of most private school students pay tuition, there is more of a personal incentive to achieve than there is in public schools.

Supposedly because parents are paying for the private school, which usually means smaller classes, more individualized teacher time with each student, supposedly better teachers because they can hire and fire whoever they want and will hopefully only hire the best teachers. I don't know if any of this is actually true.

The reason would be mostly teacher/student ration. At private schools there are more teachers. They have more money for extracurricalar activities and they can pay there teachers better.

becasue people are paying to admit their children, they will linvariably have higher standards for their childrens education. Also, snobs like that prefer the exclusivity private schools offer, since not all kids get in, they get to feel like their kids are better than everyone else. (Dont hate, i too attented a private school for a few years, you know its true). also, the teachers are usually required to have higher qualifications (which is why they get paid mroe).
