I used to have the same problem, but I found a mascara that does the trick, and haven't used anything since then. (actually it was my mom's and I "borrowed" it, but then I bought my own.) It's Maybelline. It reads on the front Maybelline New York intense XXL. It prices from $7-$15 at you can get it at Wal-Mart. It has 2 ends, first you apply the white, let it dry, then apply the black (or whatever color you chose). The white lenghtens your lashes ALOT and you can use a lash curler ($1 at Dollar Tree or Wal-Mart) to curl them, but curl them before you put on the mascara. As for the clumping, it is very good with that, but it really depends on how you apply it. If your lashes start to clump, use a really fine comb and it will seperate them and take care of your clumps. Or you can just run over them again with the wand. Close the eye that you are applying mascara to, with your lashes standing out and not so close to your eyelid, they will curl easier with the wand, just apply your mascara in a curling motion.
P.S. Bat your eyes a couple of times right after you put on your mascara, when some sticks under your eyes, use a Q-tip, concealer, then a little bit of foundation to take care of it. Any that is going to come off, will have by now, and you won't have to worry about it for the rest of the day. But just in case, carry Q-tips to take care of it if the problem arises.
Hope this helps.

The best mascara I've found yet thats cheap but effective is Maybelline Great Lash Blackest Black Mascara. This mascara really is only amazing when its not worn out, and you can tell when it won't look good anymore. It shouldn't clump, and they definetly seperate. But some people have trouble with their lashes with mascara, which is where a seperater can come in handy.
But yeah.....Its a really great mascara. Ive been using it for years and all my friends and even people I don't know come up to me and tell me how awesome my eyelashes look. And because its Blackest Black Mascara, it makes them more noticable and they definetly look longer.
I hope this helps :D

the best I have used is made by Neways - it's 100% toxic chemical free so won't irritate your eyes but it's waterproof and doesn't clump together either - gorgeousness and health at the same time!
You will not find Neways in retail stores. You can only get it through a distributor - I can help you there. Shoot me an email super_staa@yahoo.com.au if you would like to give it a try or some more info on the rest of the toxic chemical free cosmetic and personal care range.
best of luck!

Maybelline. You can get it with all different kinds of applicators, lash lengtheners, etc. It will clump, but the idea is to keep on brushing until the lashes separate. Maybelline is cheap and readily available in the USA. Don't know about AUS.

Lancome Definicils is seriously the greatest mascara: no clumps, nothing. However, it costs around twenty bucks, but definitely worth it! Another one I just started using but seems like a good one: Rimmel Lycra lash extender. Rimmel's a pretty good brand.

ANY mascara will do if you know the tricks of the trade! I used to model at 15 when Twiggy and "The Shrimp" were big big names. Everyone wanted long, thick eyelashes.
Besides using fake eyelashes to enhance the length and thickness, try these little tricks....
Apply a coat of mascara and then dip your index finger into baby powder and touch the powder to the underside and on top of your mascaraed lashes. Let it dry about 3 minutes and then reapply another coat of mascara underneath and on top of your lashes.... Let it dry another 3 minutes. Using a safety pin, separate any globs or clumps by placing the point of the pin close to the skin on your eye and pulling away from your face delicately. Worked great for me!! But be careful.... Can be done on lower eyelashes too!

Its not really mascara that I'm recommending, but have you tried Primer? Its like a white base coat you apply before mascara and it makes your lashes thicker and longer. If you wanna try out a cheap one, try the Maybelline XXL mascara. It has a primer on one end and mascara on the other end. If you want something more expensive, try the primer from MAC. Check out their website at www.maccosmetics.com. :)
