something you care about--it makes giving the speech so much easier! so a hobby, or a passion of yours--or a memory, or something you have a strong opinion about. that way, when you get up there, you can communicate your interest and sincerity to your listeners and not be so nervous.
or you could always choose some controversial topic to get their interest sparked.
good luck!
cheers!

Do it on something you know about, like or are interested in. It is much easier to recall the info if it is something you like. Remember you need to consider the audience. You don't want them bored to death. I am an English teacher and I have suffered through MANY horribly boring speeches. The worst was on pens. I've loved speeches on things I don't care about , like the growth/progression of heavy metal since the 70's & one on Harleys. What I liked so much about them is that the reader was passionate about them, didn't just read a bunch of facts. They took the time to put it together in a way that was interesting. Also, they may be die-hard for that topic but they regonzied that their audience wasn't so they found cool and interesting tidbits of info that most people know a bit about and elaborated on it.
As the other answerer said, pick something controversial. Not abortion, please. Too common. What about the war in iraq? Do you agree with it or not? Why? What is happening to the regular kids like you over there? How are thier lives being affected? Maybe interview a soldier and find out what life is like on the base.
Cristal-meth? How is it ruining lives? Why so many young people are attracted to it?
Should vicious dogs be banned from breeding (rotties, dobermans, pitbulls etc...)
I hope this helps!!
Here's a basic but good format for writing it...
1. state your view
2. give your weakest point and your reasoning behind it.
3. give 2nd strongest point and your reasoning behind it.
4. give strongest point (always last) and reasoning
5. powerful punch ending (leave them thinking)

Well, so many things come to mind. What about on bad spelling or grammar?
What type of speech is it supposed to be anyway? Just whatever you feel like? You could do a speech on how to use Yahoo! Answers. That might be helpful to the class.

Do something funny. Funny is always good. But have a point. Try and have a joke in the first twenty seconds. The rest is easy.
If you are so inclined I would make a speech about how much freedom means to you, and how much your way of life means to you.
Those speeches go down well.

that guy who said abortion is an idiot. that is a VERY bad idea for a 5 minute speech.
make it on something you like and know a lot about, that other people might not know as much about. like a sport or hobby or event or subject you like.

The best subject to pick would be one that you are already familiar with. What are some of your hobbies and interests. If you don't have an exact subject matter from you're teacher that would be the easiest because you are already familiar with the subject matter.
