Kennedy was young. The country had gone from Franklin Roosevelt who was sick and then died in office to Harry Truman who was 61 when he came into office and left office at the age of 69, then came Dwight Eisenhower who was 63 when he came into office and 71 when he left. The decision that election was between Kennedy who was 43 and Richard Nixon who was 47. Even though there was only 4 years Nixon was associated with that ageing Presidency he was apart of.
Also Kennedy had the charisma and looks, of which Nixon had neither. Both of those came in to play with the use of TV for the debates. Nixon may of in fact won if it had not been for the televised debates.

His youth, his fathers influence and money, the democratic machine, these all played a part in Kennedy getting elected.

If the truth were known, Kennedy's character left an awful lot to be desired. He was a rounder in every sense of the word. But even back then the old slogan was in play: "what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas."

The voting public was pretty much in the dark about the real John F. Kennedy, and it's doubtful that he ever would have gotten the job, had they known the real JFK!

Daddy"s money and favors owed by the democrats for all the help daddy gave them over the years. It did not hurt that Kennedy was popular with the Jet set and was able to get Mob help because of Frankie. The image history has of Kennedy was the first big snow job done by political image makers.
