I'm not American (and am therefore basing this answer from the coverage provided by the news networks)
If you want a massive party, then New York (EST) or Las Vegas (PST), but if you want some of the oddities, might I suggest the following:
The dropping of the peach in Georgia
The explosions of the Space Needle in Seattle
My personal favourite place to be for New Year in the United States would have to be Salt Lake City (simply because of the vistas that surround the city)

I think they are both equally cool. One is on the west and another on the east.
Personally I am not a fan of the snow so I'll go with sunny Las Vegas, NV.

Key West is a great place to spend New Year's. But you have to book your room at least 6 months -1 year in advance.
