I would say in high school popularity doesnt necessarily end. It almost is recreated. New groups will be formed. Alot of times the transfermation from junior high school is important. new friends, new groups, new trends. I would say in high school popularity is at its highest point. College is when it ends...

popularirty gets bigger in highschool. middle school is just starting out with the best groups that are popular, but their small. in highschool, all the most populsr groups from all jr high schools get together in highschool and hangout with the sophmores and juniors. jr high is where popularity starts.

for the most part popularity does end. But there are crowds and cliques. If you are popular within that crowd then you are popular.
But with that crowd only. Also, sports teams and party-goers make up the majority of the "popular" crowd.

dont worry about it. unless you're in a tiny town, everyone has their own group of friends. you're always going to have the group that seems to know everyone, but high school is on a larger scale of people so its easy to just find your own place.
just remember to have fun and really make the best of it. dont take anything too seriously, its just high school...and you'll probably never see these people after these four years.
good luck!
