There are several reasons:
1) If your antivirus scanner is really not on....
2) If your virus scan is not scanning what you download. Often, you need to configure your virus scan program to scan zip, rar or exe files.
3) If you don't update your virus definitions on a monthly basis
4) If you get a new virus before a virus definition is updated
5) Not all antivirus programs will find 100% of the viruses, not even McAfee or Norton.
6) If you don't run program updates often, antivirus programs can be compromised.
Also, don't get confused with viruses with spyware. These are two different things and would require two different programs to address those issues.

Besides the fact that some viruses will lay dormant until a certain date or a you open a certain email viruses are a fact of life. Using a firewall, automatic email scanning, and the latest updated virus protection is all you can do. Try windows one care and windows defender. Both can be downloaded online from ms.

new viruses are developed every second of your life
virus protection can't catch them all and find ways to block it that soon and they don't want to keep bothering you because if they fixed each one once they come out
by the time you finished updating your virus scanner, 10 more would pop up for you to update.

Because virus creators take it as challenge to create a virus that is not detected by the protection packages.
