my betta was fine for 7 months , and now he is dead. The day before he died , he was eating and he was active. He had a bubble nest. He didn't overeat before he died , and he was a noraml size , before he swelled up. The next day i wanted to feed him , and i found him dead. His stomach was really swollen, and he was dead. I want to find out if he died from dropsy , or from fish tuberculosis.

Fish can die from dropsy pretty quickly -- but there is no real range, because the exact cause of dropsy can be pretty varied. That is, dropsy is a condition that results from swelling of body tissues and excess water building up in the fish's body. This is a symptom, not a cause -- several disease can and do present this symptom.

Bacterial infections, viral infections, and tuberculosis (fungal) can all cause dropsy in a fish. The problem is that by the time you see the symptom, the disease/malady has progressed to the point of being "uncurable".

This is where the first respondent's answer comes in -- it's usually best practice to euthanize any fish exhibiting dropsy, because sometimes the underlying disease can be pretty contagious, and frankly, the fish will likely live a short while longer in pain, so it is best to put it out of it's misery. One of the fastest/least cruel is to put the fish in a bag and smack against something really hard. Sounds nasty, but works very quickly and humanely.

To your question again, smaller fish will take a much shorter time than a larger one to die from any affliction -- the sheer surface area, energy reserves, and metabolism (slower) in larger fish make them more resistant to infection.

Hope it helps!

I think the Guinness Book of world records list the "fastest Betta Death from dropsy ever recorded" as 24.078966645 hours after contact.
