W= makes the heat come on
Y= makes the A/C Come on
R= +24vac power in
C= Common (touch R and C together and you
will blow the transformer in your furnace)
G= Makes your indoor fan operate
The previous answer is correct in the usual color thermostat wires connected to these terminals. But just in case a color blind contractor installed it originally you might want to know what each terminal does.

W = white
Y = yellow
R = red
G = green
C = common generally this wire is blue. but could be some other color.
