Don't give up your dream! Just begin to get information from the right places.
First, I suggest you take some writing classes specific to what you want to do.
Second, join a writing group. Most librarys or book stores can help you with that, they often meet in those places. There you can read your work and get critiqued. This will help you hone your skills and work out the bugs.
Third, check out Dan Poynters website for writing and self publishing. There are many other writing sites out there that are helpful.
Fourth, take a look in the library for books on writing childrens books. I own a couple myself.
Keep in mind, publishing these days has really changed. Newcomers are not usually picked up by publishing houses, but that's ok, there are other ways. This is where Dan Poynters site will help you out.
If you believe in what you are doing, don't let anyone stop you. Go girl!

I don't remember the name of the school that I went through to do the same thing you mention, but was based in CT. Did it all through mail. I would do that if I were you because you get a mentor and they guarantee you will have a story ready for publishing by the end of the self paced class.
Alas, I did not finish for a number of reasons, even paying full price as I did as incentive to complete it!
My advice is go for it, and expect a lot critical advice, even from your supporters. You will make a lot of mistakes, but realise that is the BEST way to learn!
Best of luck!
