NOOOOOO! Do not give it up! Write the book and illustrate it. Keep it.
The biggest secret to publishing is who you know. Meet people, make contacts, find someone who will read it. If that fails, you can always self-publish and then publish through a company once your book is more widely read.

You might need to do something else to support yourself in the mean time, but that is the sort of dream that doesn't have a window on it. You can write a children's book at any age. You first need to write and illustrate it. Then shop it around to the different publishing houses. If nothing else you can get it self publsihed and make a limited number of copies to give to friends and family.

Never give up a dream, especially one so beautiful!! I think it's wonderful that you want to write and illustrate books for children. To begin, take some writing and art classes. If you have natural talent, which you must have, hone them with some professional help. Take some classes that will teach you about the skills and tricks about writing for children. If you can get a class that teaches about children's literature, that would be excellent. Any art institute can help you with the illustration, and you'll learn some very beneficial skills that will aid you with your illustrations.
You go girl, and all the best!!!!

1) What's it about?
Start by finding out what the story is about. Either you could find out what children like these days or you can write a story from your heart.
2) How long will it be?
Is long, short, or in between? Is a short story like Dr. Seuss' books, long like E. B. White's Stuart Little, or in between like Stellaluna or A Birthday for Frances. Choose which type and start writing, but remember you're not writing a novel.
3) Start Writing
Do it a little at a time. Short and in understandable words, so kids don't have to stop their parents in the middle of the story. Keep going and remember write what you want, when you want, and where you want.
Good Luck! ; )

I you have a burning desire to write ANYTHING do it.
You can go to the internet for sites and help on the fundamentals of writing. Don't even think about publishing until you've done that. Get in a writers group, and hone your skills by going to writers conferences and workshops (online or live). Get into a critiuqe group. And write, a lot.
You should not plan on making a living as a writer until you have lots of books on the market earning you lots of royalties. and still you'll have a bunch of work to do, promoting your work and writing the next one, and the next one after that one....

Writing is hard. We all know that. But giving up your dreams? Just because you don't know how!? Educate yourself, and prepare for the long painful (but rewarding) journey.. Don't let fear, of all things, hold you back. You live once. That's it. Make the most of it.
As for advice... get ready to change your perspective on life... and your life. Writing takes up brain and imagination power. Also, prepare yourself for rejection. There's no way around it.
Read as many writing help books as possible, even one that have nothing to do with children's books. Refrain from reading regular books, or fiction, as it zaps the imaginative power... Be ready to write at all times, you have no idea when inspiration will hit you... and finally, i guess, write for the joy of it. For the kids. For the love of writing.

You should never give up any dream!
Submit your work and see what happens! You can take courses in writing children's books at park districts, junior colleges and universities. You will get a lot of feedback/critique from your instructor and classmates. Read your book to a grade school classroom and see if they connect with the book, if the book holds their attention.
NEVER give up any dream.

The thing about dreams, IS MAKING THEM COME TRUE. If you can see it, you can do it.
The fact of the matter is all the tools you need are right in front of you, your computer. There
are web sites you can publish your book on to test it out. So WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? Its exciting putting a book together, so write as many as you can and checkout publishers as you go......

take some of your work to a publisher and see what they have to say. If they think you are good, pursue as a career. If they think you aren't so good, go to another publisher or do it as a hobby.
Good luck. Do what makes you happy.
