iPods are hands down worth the money compared to other players, but you have to determine which is the right size for you. uploading your cd collection to your ipod is free, but all new music needs to be legally purchased through the music store, but there is no file protection blocking pirated music from going on your iPod. you cannot download from the iPod, it must be done on the computer using an application called iTunes. iPod is better than the competition because of its easy to use interface and lack of proprietary file formats, which means it can play many different types of audio files, which isnt the case in many other players.

I think the ipod is worth it but thats just me. And it depends on where you get the songs from as to if you have to pay or not. itunes in not free but it automatically puts songs you buy on your ipod if you hook it up. Also if you already own a cd then it is free. You can also import music from other places on your computer into itunes and it will put it on your ipod for you. You can also get your music for free but most of the sites that offer free music are probably not legal.
