Each of the four major bowls has an affiliation with one of the major conferences, which means they take the champion of that league and put them up against an at-large team. To go to a BCS bowl game a team must have won at least six games and be in the top 14 in the BCS poll. The Big East does not have affiliation with any of the four bowls but the champion from that league gets an automatic at large bid, as does Notre Dame if they win 8 games. here are the conference affiliations.

Fiesta Bowl - Big XII
Rose Bowl - Pac 10 and Big 10
Sugar Bowl - SEC
Orange Bowl - ACC

This season is the first to offer a fifth bowl game known simply as the BCS championship game, in previous years one of the four would host it as its bowl game and it would rotate amongst the four every year. It still follows the same pattern of rotation only this time they host the bowl game and the championship game in the same stadium on different weekends.

Also its important to note that if one of the conferences affiliated with the bowl games has a team in the championship game, the bowl can take any one of the 14 at-large teams it pleases.

The national championship game matches up the top 2 teams in the BCS standings. The other four games go like this:
Sugar: SEC champ vs. at large
Orange: ACC champ vs. at large
Rose: Pac-10 champ vs. Big 10 champ
Fiesta: Big 12 champ vs. at large
The at large bids are decided a number of ways. They have to be ranked in the top 14 in the BCS standings and have at least 9 wins. The number 3 and number 4 teams are guaranteed BCS berths. The Big East champ goes in the pot with the at large berths. Notre Dame is guaranteed a BCS berth if they are in the top 8 spots in the final season poll. The non-BCS conferences are more complicated. A conference champion from one of those conferences is guaranteed a spot if they finish in the top 12. Another way they could go to a BCS bowl is if they finish in the top 16 and finish higher than a BCS conference champion.
