They don't. If the job is the same (title, responsibilities), the work performance by the man and the woman are the same, and the seniority of the man and the woman are the same, then the pay is usually the same.
If I work at a company as an executive assistant and I've only been there for six months, then I wouldn't expect to have the same pay as an executive assistant who's been there for ten years, or of a senior executive assistant. Also, if both me and another executive assitant have worked there for six months but their responsibilities are greater than mine, then I would expect them to get the greater amount of pay. But women don't usually take that into account when they complain about unequal pay. They seem to think they should be making the big bucks right away or it's discrimination.

If you do research on thi, you will find many interesting yet valid reasons, that have nothing to do with men opressing women in the workplace as is so often argued. Though this may not be fair, the reason many women earn less money than men is that due to increased personal responsibilty (children etc.) they are less willing and able to sacrifice time for a promotion. Also, women inherently are drawn to jobs that historically pay less than jobs better suited for men, ex. construction workers make more money than many secretaries. Though this may not seem fair, there is very little that can be done to change these factors.

I have pondered the same question that you ask now. Honestly, I think that some people still think that men are more competent than women are. I don't know why, but they do. But Womens' rights have skyrocketed in the last century in every aspect. Not too long ago, women could not vote or work in a job they wanted to. So I think that in another few years or so we women should be right up there with the men in that aspect!

Men tend to enter the more lucrative fields, so it's not the first goal of women to make money. They may be more likely to pursue a dream.
Women have a tendency to leave the work world for a few years at least to take care of kids, especially women with the means to do so. So in the long run they don't make it as far. But you know what? I don't think they should have to worry about sacrificing being the CEO to have kids. Raising good, healthy kids trumps being a CEO in my books.

Because men make the laws. There is no law stating that you have to pay a woman the same as a man. You just can't give the reason for it being because she is a woman.

This is a myth. Using statistics you can 'prove' anything. You would find it v. difficult to find one real woman who was getting less hour by hour for the same work; you would probably find more men but no-one is going to pay for that statistical data!

The short answer is that women are more likely to have to leave the workforce to foster children. It is this fact that keeps them slightly lower in the workforce despite the fact that they are honored members of US society.
