where there was a sedimentry rocks, which were rich in organic matter, and then buried at depths where the tempertaure and pressure are enough to transform the organic matter into oil, mostly oil migrates because of the pressure from the area of formation (source rock) through permeable and porous rocks till it is trapped in permeable and porous rocks surrounded by impermeable rocks (trap rocks) ..

Oil is typically found in limestone shale like formation. It can vary at the depths it may be found. Today some of the deepest wells ever drilled are in the Gulf of Mexico. Chevron recently reported an oil find there and were down over 12,000 feet. They have the ability to go as deep and possibly deeper than 36,000 feet. Only because oil is running about $60 a barrel makes it worth while to search at such depths. The largest known reserves of oil in the world today are located in Saudi Arabia. The second largest reserves are in Alberta Canada at what is known as the "Tar Sands". Oil here is mixed with sand and is located at the surface and is "Open Pit" mined with the largest Shovels and trucks in the world. Countries like Russia, China, Venezuela. Indonesia. Nigeria and many others also have oil reserves but nothing that can match Saudi Arabia. The Saudis produce about 10 million barrels of oil a day.
