What to wear to a formal dinner?

I'm going to my boyfriends work party on Friday and the dress code is listed as "formal" i have no idea what would be suitable to wear.......any ideas? :)

don't wear jeans. That's either informal or semi formal, depends on what you're wearing. Well, here are some ideas for each different type of bottoms and tops:


pants: try to wear dress pants if you're thinking about wearing pants instead of a dress or a skirt. Maybe black, or some other color but not anything too bright, just kind of dressy.

skirt: If you want to wear a skirt instead of a dress or pants, don't wear a mini skirt, try to wear one that isn't too short, and don't wear a jeans skirt.


dress: wear a kind of cocktail dress, or a little less formal than that. Just a little less, not too much.

shirt: wear a patterned top to match pants, and to match a skirt, don't wear a long shirt over it, but a regular-sized shirt that would fit you. If it's at night, you can wear glitter, if it's not, don't wear glitter. But use something that's fashionable but also elegnat at the same time.


shoes: wear high heels with the dress, maybe low high heels with the skirt, boots with the pants, or just high heels. Match it up with the color you're wearing!!! :)

jewelry: Maybe wear something silver, but not too bright and not too big. Maybe pearls (doesn't have to be real, of course =]) , or earrings that look pretty elegant. But I do suggest pearls.

One thing I would find out is if the dinner is a "holiday function". If so, it may offer red as a color option. Otherwise the black dress is a safe choice. Another safe and classy choice are pearls. Any other jewelry should also be modest and classic. Nothing to funky. For footwear, you can't go wrong with a black shoe with a modest heal and neutral or tan sheer hose. Get a good brand of nylons as a nice pair looks awesome with a nice dress especially if the dress is not full length.

Also, try not to have too much to drink or reveal too many secrets about your boyfriend. Part of the mission is to show his co-workers what a classy, beautiful girl friend he has. Finally, have fun!

Buy or borrow a nice " little, black cocktail dress" This is the holidays & you can go with rhinestones-glitter etc but then tone down the jewelry. If your dress is plain- you may wear some jewelry or none at all. Understated beauty is the best- " less is the best" Wear nice earrings- pearls are great with formal wear. Black shoes with regular nylons not black nylons. Small black purse to match your shoes. If you have long hair try wearing it up- that will really add to your overall projection of yourself.Please do not overdo your make-up. At the party try not to over do anything- your behavior reflects on him- tone down the drinking- eating- going outside for a smoke. Good luck.

a "little black dress". The dress doesn't actually have to be black but the idea is a great looking dress that isn't too flashy (or trashy) a nice classic cut with a length that isn't much above the knee would be great! A nice clutch purse for a few small necessities and don't forget great accessories like nice dressy heals and think great jewelry....it's holiday time so a little bit more sparkle is great but don't go overboard. This year dark hose / tights are in but a great bare leg is always in style. Don't forget your makeup hair and nails and you will be ready to go. I usually get my hair done for a formal party ...a updo will finish off a great outfit everytime! Have a Great time!

I'd suggest a dress. Knee lenght would be good because it's winter and it's fairly cold. Pick a color that suits your skintone, but if you can't find one, black or white look good on anybody.

for shoes, I'd suggest a pump. If you wanna go strappy with open toe, no panty hose, according to Harper's Bazzar. Black is a good shoe color, but remember. If your walking around, pick somthing good to walk in, not somthing that will make you want to sit down after 5 minutes.

Accessories should indefinatly match. A clutch purse is very sophisicated, and holds the necessities. Go light on jewelry, have a cute purse, and remember that the best way to look great would be believe you look great. Nobody who doubts themselves is ever best dressed. You gotta flaunt it!

For a formal dinner party I would wear a nice simple black dress. You can never go over board with a simple black dress.
Add a nice silver bracelet and earrings to dress it up abit.

Because it is a work party, do not wear anything too revealing, like low cuts or short skirts because it will reflect poorly upon him. dress nicely, like the classic black dress. the mindset you shoudl have is if you would not wear this outfit around your boss you should not wear it at your boyfriends office dinner

Wear a beautiful black dress long/medium! hoop earings and either a dimond or black neakless, with black high heels 1 1/2 - 2 inch. Whatever u do DO NOT where anything too reveling like short skirts or short dresses.
