can agree a settlement without your consent and cancel any court appearance, which I find totally undemocratic and takes away the an englishmans home is his castle attitude giving the appearance that lawyers are the new mafia and shouldn't be trusted. Also if you're asked by the lawyers to pay a back hander pay it you'll get most of what they agree then and i doubt that the back handers are listed for tax,. there is no room in the UK for honest citizens, lie your head off its expected. The time is ripe like in roman times for a takeover of UK politics and its outmoded systems

I strongly suggest that you look at the state of Alabama. Actually, in the USA, "no win, no fee" has been held unconstitutional.

No i don't agree the correct procedure is informed consent of the client, if the solicitors take action without your consent, they become personally liable for any losses etc, the civil procedure rules 1998, allow matters to be settled to avoid expense this is the whole point, to reduce costs in the long. You are a victim of misinformation which is rife on the internet!
